Thailand is a country located in Southeast Asia. It shares land borders with Laos, Cambodia and Malaysia in the South. The vibrant and busy city of Bangkok is the capital of Thailand and attracts many tourists all year round.
Thai culture has been strongly influenced by both India and China and is the only Southeast Asian country never to have been colonised by a European country. Despite this, Thailand today is a country which has been greatly influenced by the west and has seen a major boom in its tourism industry over the past 15 years.
Thailand respects a strong ancestral culture and spiritual practice, quite different to that of Western customs. Like most Asian cultures, there is a great sense of hospitality and generosity.
Thailand is made up of 75 provinces, each province being divided into smaller districts. In terms of land area, Thailand is approximately the same size as France. There is a great deal of beautiful coast line both to the west and east of Thailand, which attracts holiday makers from around the globe. Many diving centres have been setup in Thailand to exploit the crystal clear tropical waters.
To the north of the country, mountainous regions can be found, with the highest peak being Doi Inthanon at 2,565 meters high. This forested region is a must-see for those who want to have a glimpse at the more traditional Thai way of life.
