Wales is one of the four constituent countries of the United Kingdom and is located in the south west of Britain. Sharing its only land border with England, it has over 1200 km of spectacular coastline and a great deal of diverse mountainous regions. Like Scotland, Wales has deep Celtic and Gaelic roots and its own unique 'Welsh' language. Nevertheless English is spoken by the large majority of the people and considered the main language.
The capital, and largest city in Wales, is Cardiff which has a growing population of over 320,000 inhabitants. Central Wales, the west and the south west are predominantly rural areas and characterised by hilly and mountainous terrain. Interestingly Wales has the somewhat unenviable reputation of having per square mile some of the highest shipwreck rates in Europe. This is largely due to many ships being sunk during strong Atlantic storms in the industrial era.
Wales has a lot to offer the holiday maker, and should not be overlooked if you are planning a visit to the United Kingdom. Indeed you can set the task of visiting the Seven Wonders of Wales, all geographical and cultural landmarks dotted around northern Wales.
Wales is quite similar to Scotland in terms of green hill landscapes, rivers and mountainous regions. The highest region in Wales is in Snowdonia, with the highest peak standing at 1085 m (3,560 ft) tall. There are around 15 Welsh mountains which stand at over 3000 ft tall and are otherwise known as the Welsh 3000's.
With miles of heritage coastline, three national parks and 4 areas of 'outstanding beauty', Wales boasts some impressive scenery.
